Why the handicap exists
A handicap adjusts the score for settlement purposes, creating a two-sided market even when one team is a strong favourite. You are not predicting the displayed final score alone; you are applying the listed line to your selection before determining the result.
Whole-goal lines
On Team A -1, subtract one goal from Team A’s score. A two-goal win settles as a win, a one-goal win is a push and any draw or loss settles as a loss. On Team B +1, add one goal to Team B. A one-goal defeat is a push.
Half-goal lines
Half lines remove the push. Team A -0.5 must win. Team B +0.5 wins for betting purposes if the match is drawn or Team B wins. The half goal is a settlement device, not a prediction that half a goal will be scored.
Quarter-goal lines
A quarter line splits the stake equally across adjacent handicaps. A ₱200 bet at -0.25 becomes ₱100 at 0 and ₱100 at -0.5. If the match draws, the zero portion pushes and the -0.5 portion loses. The displayed odds apply according to the operator’s split settlement.
Check the match period
Handicaps may apply to the full match, first half, a set or a quarter. Football markets often settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time but exclude extra time unless stated. Basketball commonly includes overtime. Never assume one sport’s convention applies to another.
Practise before staking
Write a hypothetical final score, apply the handicap and label each half of any quarter line. If you cannot explain the settlement on paper, skip the market until the rules are clear.
Final checklist
- Can you explain the market or game rule in one sentence?
- Have you checked the exact settlement terms rather than relying on memory?
- Is the stake inside a pre-set, affordable entertainment budget?
- Would you still make the same decision after a ten-minute pause?
- Do you know the time, money and emotional signal that ends the session?
