Point spreads
A favourite at -5.5 must win by six or more for that selection to cover. An underdog at +5.5 can lose by five and still cover. The handicap changes settlement, not the official score.
Whole-number pushes
At -5, a five-point win usually pushes and returns the stake. A six-point win covers; four points does not. Check whether the market uses push settlement or a sport-specific rule.
Game totals
The total combines both teams’ points. Over 214.5 needs 215 or more; under needs 214 or fewer. Pace, efficiency and lineup context may inform an estimate but cannot remove game-to-game variance.
Overtime rules
Many full-game basketball markets include overtime, while regulation-only and period markets do not. This distinction can change both spread and total settlement. The market title and house rules control.
Quarter and player markets
Quarter lines settle on a shorter, more variable sample. Player props can be affected by minutes, fouls, injury and coaching decisions. Confirm whether a player must start or participate for action.
Late-game variance
Intentional fouls and free throws can move a spread or total quickly. Do not interpret a near miss as evidence that the next bet deserves a larger stake. Each market needs its own price-based decision.
Final checklist
- Can you explain the market or game rule in one sentence?
- Have you checked the exact settlement terms rather than relying on memory?
- Is the stake inside a pre-set, affordable entertainment budget?
- Would you still make the same decision after a ten-minute pause?
- Do you know the time, money and emotional signal that ends the session?
